Plant Care 101: Supplement Your Environment

Supplemental Lighting

If you find yourself needing to supplement your light, specialty grow lights and full spectrum bulbs may be a worthwhile investment. These lights have been designed to produce light that emulates the sun without the heat and risk of sunburn from direct sun.

Grow lights allow us to grow plants in dark rooms without windows.

Grow lights are easy to use, and are great for both variegated plants and greens. We do our best to keep these on standby in our Plant Lab and in-store.

Humidity: Info & Techniques

On the topic of supplementing, we should talk about humidity. Tropical plants will appreciate more ambient moisture present in the air. Using humidifiers or pebble trays can help add humidity with little effort. Hummidity can be affected by variables in our home like high temperatures, running air conditioners, heaters, and fans. All of these can reduce humidity which can lead to crisping leaf tips, stunted growth, and unsuccessful plants.

Humidifiers are a great tool to improve your environment for tropical houseplants.

When running a humidifier it’s a good idea to start on the lower settings/intensity; water droplets collecting on the leaves of your plants can contribute to overwatering.

As always we hope these tips help, and we encourage you to learn as much about your space and the plants you want to bring home! We’re always available for questions along the way in the comments here, in-store, or on social media!
